Make it Monday: Paint stick burlap star

Make it Monday: Paint stick burlap star

You may recall when I made the folk art-inspired flag from paint sticks this summer. My folk art flag was beginning to fall apart and it had passed its phase of being useful…so I decided to repurpose it.

I started by taking the flag apart. See the paint? I didn’t bother taking the paint off since the sticks would be covered with burlap.

I laid it out in a star pattern and hot glued it together.

Then I began wrapping the star in wide burlap ribbon, taking the time to glue it at each pass. It took a long time and lots of ribbon, but when I finished, I had this:

I’m planning to hang it up and hang a wreath in the center of it. Isn’t it cute?

What crafts have you done lately?

DIY Farmhouse Sign

This week, my daughter and I were trying to think of the perfect sign to hang behind our piano. I knew I wanted something “music-themed” and I wanted to try to make something. We went through our scrap wood pile and found this:

We measured it around another long, thin board we found and painted the back board white.

We then pulled the framing pieces off and cut them to the correct size. I chose to make it easier on us and not miter them. We then stained the framing pieces.

We reattached the framing pieces.

When we were thinking of something to put on the sign, we decided on a quote from one of our favorite hymns, “How Great Thou Art.” We quickly created a stencil on our Silhouette Cameo.

We cut out the stencil and placed it on the sign. We then traced the stencil.

And then we filled in the traced stencil.

We then attached D-ring hanging hardware to the back of the frame and called it finished.

I was really pleased with how this turned out. I can’t wait to get our family room painted so we can hang it up! I’ll surely show it to you when we do.

Memorial Day Craft: How to Make a Paint Stick Flag

Memorial Day Craft: How to Make a Paint Stick Flag

Are you looking for a super easy and cheap folk art craft to do with your kiddos? Look no further than your local hardware store. Paint stir sticks are cheap and can be used to make so many cute things.

In the picture below, you will see everything needed to make a paint stick flag:

Simply glue your paint sticks together like this: lay two paint stir sticks vertically and glue the remaining sticks horizontally so that they cross the vertical sticks. I used hot glue for this, but craft glue may hold better.

Once the glue is dry, paint your sticks to look like an American flag. I used white star stickers, but if you’d prefer, you could paint or draw your stars.

So there you have it- a folk art inspired wood stick flag!
